The Holiday Trip, Without the Holiday Price

Holiday travel costs more because everyone wants the same few days. Shift the day, book ahead, and pack light โ€” the trip stays the same, the price drops.

Read the cover story

Book before the rush. Holiday flights fill up and the cheaper seats go first. Aim to book one to two months ahead. Waiting for a last-minute holiday deal usually means paying more, not less.

Fly on the quiet days. The busiest days are the ones right before and right after the holiday. The holiday itself โ€” Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Day โ€” is often the calmest day in the airport, and fares on those days often run lower.

Do the bag math. One checked bag on a big U.S. airline runs about $35 each way. That is $70 round trip for one bag. Two travelers checking two bags pay about $140 extra. Carry-on only, when you can manage it, keeps that money in your pocket.

Leave early in the day. The first flights out have the fewest delays behind them. A morning departure also leaves you options โ€” if a flight is cancelled, later flights the same day can still get you there.

Compare days before you book. Use the flight search at the top of this page and price the same route on two different days. Midweek departures often cost less than Friday and Sunday departures.

Richmond, Virginia: History on the River

Read the feature

Richmond packs a lot into a small city. The James River runs right through downtown, and the oldest streets sit minutes from the museums.

Start at the river and work up the hill. The Capitol, the art museum, and the old market streets are all close together. Most visitors can cover the highlights in a weekend.

  • Virginia Museum of Fine Arts โ€” free entry, open every day. One of the top art museums in the South.
  • Maymont โ€” a 100-acre estate with gardens, a mansion, and farm animals kids can feed.
  • Belle Isle and the James River Park System โ€” walking trails and river views in the middle of the city.
  • Virginia State Capitol โ€” designed by Thomas Jefferson. Free guided tours on Capitol Square.
  • Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden โ€” 50 acres of themed gardens, green all year.

Manila, Philippines: Start Inside the Walls

Read the feature

Manila is big and loud, so give it a plan. The oldest part of the city โ€” Intramuros, the walled city โ€” is the right place to start.

From the walls, the museums and Rizal Park are a short walk. End the day on the Baywalk as the sun goes down over Manila Bay.

  • Intramuros and Fort Santiago โ€” walk the old Spanish walled city and its riverside fort.
  • Rizal Park โ€” Manila's central park, built around the monument to national hero Josรฉ Rizal.
  • National Museum Complex โ€” art, anthropology, and natural history in three buildings. Entry is free.
  • Binondo โ€” the world's oldest Chinatown. Go hungry โ€” the food streets are the point.
  • Manila Baywalk โ€” the bayfront promenade. Best at sunset.

Orlando, Florida: The Holiday Season Edition

Read the feature

Orlando goes all in for the holidays. The parks add Christmas events from November into the New Year, and downtown gets its own tree and lights.

Book park tickets early for holiday weeks. Build in one slow day downtown โ€” Lake Eola costs nothing and the swan boats are easy with kids.

  • Walt Disney World โ€” holiday parades, fireworks, and park decorations through the season.
  • Universal Orlando โ€” Grinchmas and the holiday parade, with balloons over the streets.
  • SeaWorld Orlando Christmas Celebration โ€” Christmas shows, lights, and a sea of trees on the lake.
  • Lake Eola Park โ€” downtown's lake. Swan boats, skyline views, and the city's Christmas tree in season.
  • Kennedy Space Center โ€” rockets and astronaut exhibits, about an hour east of the city.

Tips Column

From the Travel Desk

  • Screenshot your bookings. Confirmations saved on your phone work offline. Airport Wi-Fi does not always cooperate.
  • Carry one change of clothes. A full change in your carry-on covers you if a checked bag runs late.
  • Check the advisory chart. This page lists the current U.S. State Department levels. Look before you book overseas.
  • Get the airline's app before you leave. Gate changes and delays land there first.
  • Keep medicine and chargers on you. They ride in your personal item. Never in a checked bag.
